IRS field notes

Box 1 reports taxable interest income of $10 or more from banks, credit unions, or other payers. Box 2 reports early-withdrawal penalties, Box 3 reports tax-exempt interest, and Box 4 reports federal income tax withheld. The $10 threshold is unchanged for 2026.

How it works

Banks and financial institutions issue a 1099-INT when you earn $10 or more in interest during the year from savings accounts, money market accounts, CDs, or bonds. You report the Box 1 amount on your 1040, and on Schedule B if your total interest exceeds $1,500.

Tax-exempt interest

Box 3 reports interest that is exempt from federal income tax, such as most municipal bond interest. It is not included in your taxable income, but it may still affect other tax calculations, and it can be taxable at the state level.

Example

FieldExample value
PayerCommunity Bank
RecipientJane Q. Taxpayer
Box 1 — Interest income$340
Box 2 — Early withdrawal penalty$0
Box 3 — Tax-exempt interest$0
Box 4 — Federal tax withheld$0

Bonds and CDs

Interest from savings accounts, certificates of deposit, and most bonds is taxable in the year it is credited, whether or not you withdrew it. If you cashed a CD early, the penalty appears in Box 2 and is deductible above the line on your return.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who receives a 1099-INT?

Anyone who earns $10 or more in interest from a bank, credit union, or other financial institution during the year.

What is in Box 1?

Box 1 is your taxable interest income — the amount you report on your tax return.

Do I need Schedule B?

Yes, if your total taxable interest and dividends exceed $1,500. Otherwise the 1099-INT amount goes directly on your 1040.

What is the $10 threshold?

Interest of $10 or more must be reported on a 1099-INT. That threshold has not changed for 2026.

Is my savings account interest reported?

Yes, if it reaches $10 for the year. Many accounts that pay little interest may not produce a 1099-INT.
